My Sister Charlene (Age 20)

Here Charlene is waiting for her date to pick her up and take her to the big dance.  She is standing in our living room in Price.  About this same time, Charlene was Miss Carbon County, and the 3rd runner up to Miss Utah National Guard.  She has composed well over 100 songs-- some of which have been published in the LDS Hymn Book, the Primary Children's Song Book, and the Friend, which is the publication for children in the Primary. She won the LDS Church Song Writing Contest in 1977 by writing "A Woman's Prayer," so this song has been performed in the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City and at Nauvoo for the dedication of a special Relief Society Monument. She played Carmen in the opera, Carmen, when she lived in Hawaii. She has also performed in The King and I (while at BYU) and Teahouse of the August (while still living in Price).  She has taught music in the public schools, everyone is always welcome in her home, there is always room for one more to eat at her table, and her greatest accomplishment is that she is the mother of 12 wonderful children.
I love you, Charlene!

Those were the days...
the days of fashion that knew no limits.
At a school dance in Jr. High, my date wore one of these "umbrella" dresses. Everything was going "swell" except that the dance was in the old basement gym and the wrestlers had rolled up there mats along the walls. Then the crowd enlarged with more and more umbrellas twirling and my date got too close to the large rolled-up mats and snagged her slip on a roll end. As we proceeded to twirl out into the sea of fabric suddenly she came to a stop and when we looked at her skirt it was flat! Then we observed 40 yards of frilly slip stretched across the floor! She had unraveled the whole length of her slip as we twirled and twirled to the Everly Brothers!
Thanks for making an umbrella look great Charlene!

I have always relished in the calm and delightful spirit that Charlene carries with her wherever she goes. I was thrilled to discover that we share an interest in vocal music (O.k., well, I have and interest and she has amazing talent). It has been a pleasure getting to know her. Thanks for sharing her with us Bonnie! Happy Birthday Charlene! It really meant a lot to me when you came to my choir performance and BBQ!
